On this fairytale Royal day trip from Copenhagen, spend the morning at the picturesque UNESCO-listed Frederiksborg Castle. Uniquely set on three islands on Castle Lake, it is the largest Renaissance castle in Scandinavia. The castle was originally built in the early 1600s by King Christian IV.

Tragically, a fire broke out in 1859, and the greater part of the interior of the castle was destroyed – except the Chapel which remains largely intact and is where the kings and queens of Denmark are still anointed today. The castle was immaculately restored by J. C. Jacobsen, the owner of the Carlsberg Breweries in the 1800s and as well as a palace, it is now the magnificent home of Denmark’s Museum of National History with an extensive portrait collection.

On exiting the castle, wander the majestic Baroque manicured and styled gardens and grounds.

Next, you’ll head to Kronborg Castle, the spectacular setting of Shakespeare's Hamlet! It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The castle towers above a very narrow promontory on the tip of Zealand and overlooks the Oresund Sound between the coasts of Denmark and Sweden. It is one of the most spectacular and important Renaissance castles in Europe with majestic spires, towers, columns, sandstone and copper roofs.

Your guide will take you on an intimate tour of this magnificent palace that for 400 years served as the royal headquarters for the collection of the Sound Dues: a tax on ships that sailed through the Oresund Sound. With its guns and cannon pointed at the ships sailing past, Kronborg was legendary among sailors and diplomats in its heyday in the late Sixteenth century - no one dared not to pay their taxes!

After a magical day immersed in Denmark’s royal history, enjoy the scenic coastal train ride back to Copenhagen.
